AI Is Taking Over—Might As Well Get On Board

If you follow the news, the reporting about “AI Technology taking over”, ebbs and flows. But don’t let the news cycle fool you, advances in  Artificial Intelligence Technology and how it impacts our daily lives is here to stay, and in many respects, the AI revolution  hasn’t even begun.

We Went Down the AI Rabbit Hole

At CompuVoip, it’s our business to be at the forefront of technology, including advances in AI Telecom, AI Phone Systems and AI Chat.

In the process of researching and implementing new phone system features to offer our customers, we went down the AI rabbit hole. What we saw while we were down there, provided us with some insight into advances AI will have on the economy and society at large.

Artifical Intelligence is Not Going Away

Tech stocks, including AI, have had a rough start to the year, but this is more reflective of macroeconomic conditions than a referendum on the future of AI.

Companies, including Microsoft, SoftBank, Google, Tesla, Oracle, Invidia and more, are pouring 10’s of Billions of dollars into AI technology and infrastructure. Sovereign funds are also getting into the act with the UEA pledging to invest over $1 trillion over the next decade.

Investments in AI are wide-ranging. What began with clear-cut areas like semiconductors and servers to support model training has expanded to include data center infrastructure and energy generation.

As AI growth accelerates, its impact is rippling across nearly every sector of the economy.

Follow The Money

Large corporations don’t casually throw 100’s of billions  of dollars at new technology.  As a rule of thumb, it makes sense to keep an eye on the “smart money”. They wouldn’t invest that type of money unless they see a payoff down the line.

Does that mean that every corporation investing in AI will see a return on investment? Of course not.

Every gold rush has its winners and losers—and AI is no different. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s seen as a once-in-a-generation technology with the power to reshape everything, and it is a good indicator of the direction in which things are going.

AI Adoption in The Real World is Just Getting Started

You likely have had some experience utilizing AI in your daily life,  however, to this point, its integration in,  and impact on our daily lives has been limited. But that is about to change for the following reasons.

The real world application and integration of AI has been lagging behind the development of the technology. This is a natural progression; first create the technology and build capacity, then afterwards focus on it’s application in products and services.

Generative AI is only in its infant stages. Until this point, AI has worked primarily as a compiler of information; comparing your queries to others, and mimicking responses. While it’s a great advancement, and does at times seem “intelligent”, it has its limitations.

The future of AI, is in Generative AI, which is just ramping up now.

What is Generative AI

Generative AI is the stuff dreams…and nightmares, are made of. It is when AI, buy “understanding” underlying thought processes, can not only compile data, but can generate it’s own unique data, content, responses and even actions.

Since CompuVoip is a VoIP Phone System Provider, I’ll give an example with phones.

Current AI Technology provides us the ability to offer some pretty cool, cutting edge phone system features. We can have AI respond to customers phone prompts, and even have the AI create actions based on those prompts (place orders, forward calls, submit tickets etc.).

Generative AI would take things to a whole new level.

Generative AI could review your businesses contacts on your CRM, “decide” which contacts present the best opportunity, and autonomously call the contact and have a full life-like sales call with them.. This is just scratching the surface of what a perfected generative AI could do.

To sum up the difference between AI and Generative AI; AI is meant to mimic humans, generative AI is designed to replace humans.

The Real World Implications of AI

There are real world implications on how AI will impact our daily lives. some of it is good, some of it isn’t so good, but mostly it is unknown.

The Good

  • Healthcare Diagnoses -AI could utilize all available data and case studies to provide a faster more accurate medical diagnoses
  • Drug Development – AI could theoretically develop new drugs quickly and utilize data to detect potential side effects and dangers from them
  • Customer Service
  • Increased Productivity

These are just a few examples, but it can even help in more mundane ways, like planning a vacation for you to suit your tastes. In theory, the use cases for generative AI, is only limited by ones imagination.

The Bad

The adoption of AI isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. It is already having a negative impact on certain job fields.

As a personal anecdote, throughout high school, my daughter wanted become a graphic designer. However, by the time she graduated last year, AI had already made significant advances in graphic design leading to a lot less billable hours for graphic designers. So I encouraged her to look into other fields.

There is no question that AI will have a profound impact on the job market. That doesn’t necessarily have to be as bad as it sounds.

The invention of the automobile put horse-carriage dealers out of business, but there are more people working in auto related industries than there ever were in the horse-carriage industry.

Big Tech Also Feared AI

The reason big tech is investing so heavily in AI isn’t solely because of the opportunity it presents, but it is also partially motivated by fear of being left out of the AI revolution.

For example, Google was an early innovator in AI. they utilized it in their search algorithms and Google Ads products, but until recently, never embraced AI as a standalone product like ChatGPT.

Some suspect that Google delayed the rollout of their AI tool because they viewed AI as a threat to their business model.

Google’s main source of revenue is it’s paid search ads, well what happens when instead of search showing websites in the search results, you have an AI generated answer in the search results. potentially, this could e lead to the ends of Google Paid Ad business.

Google has only recently begun to use AI Overview for search responses, when competition from ChatGPT left them no choice.
